Machinga return to Kariakoo streets, defying relocation order 03.08.2026

Informal traders known as *machinga* have returned to Uhuru and Msimbazi roads in Dar es Salaam's Kariakoo area, defying a government relocation order issued in February 2026. The operation to clear these vendors from unauthorized zones, including road reserves and footpaths, began on March 4, 2026, led by the Dar es Salaam City Council, auxiliary police, and the Police Force. Despite these efforts, traders continue to set up informal stalls along major thoroughfares, triggering complaints from road users who report gridlock and safety hazards.
