French President Emmanuel Macron welcomed Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni to the French Riviera resort of Antibes on Thursday for their first bilateral summit since a strategic alliance treaty between France and Italy came into force in 2021. The meeting occurs shortly after Meloni distanced herself from former U.S. President Donald Trump, who had mocked her for allegedly "begging" for a photograph at a recent G7 summit. The French presidency stated the summit aims to deepen Franco-Italian cooperation in several strategic sectors, notably defence, nuclear energy, and space.
