Macron unveils Rwanda genocide memorial in Paris, marking 'quest for truth' 02.06.2026

French President Emmanuel Macron and Rwandan President Paul Kagame inaugurated a memorial in Paris on Tuesday, dedicated to the victims of the 1994 Rwandan genocide. Located on the banks of the Seine, the monument, named "L'Archive," signifies France's acknowledgment of its failure to intervene despite warnings of the impending massacres. Macron described it as the "culmination of a long and patient quest for truth," referencing his 2021 admission of France's lack of will to halt the genocide, which claimed approximately 800,000 lives, primarily Tutsis. Rwandan President Kagame praised Macron's "courage and humanity" for accepting France's role, noting it has gone further than other nations in confronting historical responsibilities. The monument features two black brass steles bearing a tribute to the victims, designed by artist Grada Kilomba.
