Madlanga Commission hears Hawks’ Jacob suspended leave and allegedly compromised R200m cocaine operation 03.06.2026

The Madlanga Commission heard testimony from Hawks Colonel Gavin Jacob regarding a 2021 R200 million cocaine operation in KwaZulu-Natal. Despite being on leave when informed about the 541kg cocaine bust, Jacob returned to duty, a decision criticized by commission members for not directly informing his commander. He conceded this conduct was an irregular procedural flaw. The commission also questioned Jacob's handling of the operation, including the presence of an individual he believed represented customs officials during seal breaking, and the early removal of the cocaine from the scene before full processing, a move contrary to established procedure according to previous testimony. Jacob acknowledged not contacting the Local Criminal Record Centre due to insufficient exhibit bags.
