« Ne pas en faire un lieu de mémoire » : les travaux pour transformer la maison natale d’Adolf Hitler en commissariat bientôt achevés17h45 21.02.2026

The transformation of Adolf Hitler's birth house in Braunau am Inn, Austria, into a police station is nearing completion, with works initiated in 2023 and expected to conclude by the end of the first quarter. This project, costing €20 million, aims to prevent neo-Nazi pilgrimages to the 17th-century building where Hitler was born on April 20, 1889. The Austrian Ministry of the Interior announced the impending end of construction, with operations scheduled to commence in the second quarter of 2026. The house, purchased by the state in 2019 for €810,000 after a lengthy legal battle, will not become a memorial site, a decision made by a commission of experts to neutralize its symbolic significance. Despite the government's intention to clearly signal that no Nazi commemoration is permissible, the repurposing has drawn criticism from some locals and organizations, who question the choice of a police station and suggest alternative uses like a pacifism center.
