Major blow to betting gangs during World Cup: Police arrest dozens, millions involved 07.07.2026

Vietnamese police, as part of an intensive crackdown on illegal gambling during the 2026 FIFA World Cup, have arrested 85 people linked to two large-scale illegal betting gang operations. Raids conducted in late June in Ho Chi Minh City revealed highly hierarchical and strictly controlled structures. Since October, these gangs have recorded illegal transactions worth approximately $133 million, which is roughly €116 million. Gang leaders admitted that the bets were primarily provided to individuals in Cambodia through various agents. In total, during the championship, police dismantled 73 operations and arrested 346 suspects in the first 20 days. Colonel Bui Tuan Anh confirmed that transaction amounts in these cases reached trillions of dong, highlighting the scale of illegal activity in the country.
