breaking newsHighway construction drives economic growth, says LLM 05.05.2026

The Malaysian Highway Authority (LLM) asserts that highway construction remains a vital catalyst for national economic growth by fostering job creation, strengthening supply chains, and providing business opportunities for local traders at rest areas. Director-general Hadzmir Yusoff highlighted that daily traffic volumes currently reach between 5.5 million and six million vehicles, with 600,000 new vehicles registered last year alone. While acknowledging that highways alone cannot permanently solve urban congestion, officials emphasize that infrastructure development is essential to accommodate rising vehicle numbers. Consequently, LLM and industry leaders like IJM Corporation Bhd CEO Chua Lay Hoon advocate for a dual approach, combining continued highway expansion with increased public transport utilization, such as LRT and MRT systems, to effectively manage Malaysia's growing traffic demands.
