What’s happening in Mali one week after attack by armed groups? All we know 05.05.2026

One week after coordinated attacks on April 25 by al-Qaeda-linked JNIM and Tuareg separatist FLA, Mali's military government is restructuring amid a severe security crisis. JNIM claimed responsibility for assaults on military sites nationwide, including Bamako, and captured Kidal with FLA, which seeks an independent Azawad. Defence Minister Sadio Camara died in a suicide bombing, leading leader Assimi Goita to assume the defence role. At least 23 people were killed, with UN reports of extrajudicial killings, abductions by security forces, and blockades causing starvation in areas like Diafarabe. Russian mercenaries, now under Africa Corps, have about 2,000 fighters protecting the leadership, while FLA holds 130 Malian soldiers captive in Kidal, despite temporary alliances between the groups.
