Joo Seng fire: S’pore man, 44, says he started fire at parents house but didn't mean to harm anyone 06.05.2026

A 44-year-old Singaporean man, Liu Zhe Yuan, appeared in court on May 6, 2026, facing charges of arson for setting fire to his parents' flat at Block 14 Joo Seng Road on May 4. Liu admitted to starting the fire by burning charcoal in the living room but claimed he did not intend to harm anyone. He appealed for bail to manage his parents' finances, citing their poor health and vulnerability to scams, and stated he handled their finances. Prosecutors requested a two-week remand for a mental health evaluation, which the judge granted, denying bail until assessments are complete. The fire caused destruction of cash, endangered Liu and his elderly parents who escaped safely, and led to eight individuals being hospitalized for smoke inhalation, along with two firefighters.
