Man from 100,000 years ago may be earliest victim of stabbing in face 09.07.2026

The Independent

Archaeologists have discovered evidence of a potential facial stabbing wound on a human fossil known as Qafzeh 25, dating back approximately 100,000 years. Found in Israel's Qafzeh Cave, the remains show a healed lesion on the jawbone and a lower premolar, suggesting the individual survived the sharp-force trauma for a period. Researchers from the Spanish National Centre for Research on Human Evolution used CT X-ray scans and microscopy to identify the injury. This discovery provides rare insight into Middle Palaeolithic violence and the social evolution of early Homo sapiens. Additionally, the study revealed undocumented dental conditions, such as caries and enamel defects, offering clues about ancient oral health and living conditions. The preservation of the remains suggests deliberate burial rather than a carnivore attack, reinforcing the site's importance in studying early human funerary practices and complex social behaviors.
