Mayor Ken Sim accuses B.C. government of failing Vancouver on mental health and addictions crisis 14.07.2026

Vancouver Mayor Ken Sim has sharply criticized the BC NDP government for failing to address the mental health and addictions crisis in Vancouver, following the province's announcement of 132 new involuntary treatment beds in Surrey and Prince George. The $149 million investment will renovate and expand facilities in those cities, with beds expected to open between late 2027 and 2028. However, none of the beds are located within Vancouver, which Sim describes as the epicentre of the crisis in Canada. In a pointed statement, Sim said the province has "chosen to ignore the city carrying the greatest burden" and noted that nearly two years have passed since Premier David Eby committed to expanding involuntary care, yet Vancouver has received no new beds.
