Meer dan 1500 amnestieverzoeken na nieuwe Venezolaanse wet 22.02.2026

Following the enactment of a new law on Thursday, over 1500 political prisoners in Venezuela have submitted amnesty requests, as announced by Parliament Speaker Jorge Rodríguez on Saturday. This development occurs amidst pressure from the United States for the interim government to release political detainees. The new legislation requires prisoners to formally apply for amnesty through the courts handling their cases, rather than granting it automatically. While public prosecutors had previously requested the release of 379 prisoners, only eighty have been freed to date, according to Rodríguez. Interim President Delcy Rodríguez, the speaker's sister, championed the amnesty law, which was introduced after President Nicolás Maduro was detained during a U.S. military raid on January 3rd. Opposition figures have expressed skepticism, citing potential loopholes that could still be used against political adversaries of Maduro.
