Mega-iceberg A23a, once the world's largest and a notable fixture for nearly 40 years, is now disintegrating into a "blue mush" as revealed by recent satellite imagery. This colossal iceberg, which calved from Antarctica's Filchner-Ronne Ice Sheet in 1986, spent decades grounded on the seafloor before breaking free in 2020. Its journey has been marked by periods of being trapped in ocean currents and a near-grounding event near South Georgia in December 2024. The iceberg, which was once three times the size of New York City, is now approximately one-third of its original size, with warmer South Atlantic waters accelerating its melting and fragmentation, evidenced by vibrant blue melt ponds and surrounding ice melange.
