Mehr als 330.000 Grippeimpfungen in Österreich verschollen – laut Behörden „nicht ungewöhnlich” 17.02.2026

In Austria, over 330,000 influenza vaccine doses from the 2025/2026 season are unaccounted for, adding to a concerning trend of over 900,000 missing doses in the past three years. While approximately 1.48 million doses were distributed, only about 1.15 million were registered in the e-vaccination pass, creating a significant discrepancy. The Austrian Ministry of Health attributes these differences to explainable factors like registration delays or technical issues, deeming the situation "not unusual." However, the financial implications are substantial, potentially costing around nine million euros based on an estimated ten euros per dose for the missing vaccines over three years. The Austrian Health Insurance Fund (ÖGK) acknowledges the difficulty in tracking every dose across thousands of practices, with potential explanations including over-ordering by providers, IT problems, or incomplete documentation. A proposed solution involves linking billing to the e-vaccination pass to ensure mandatory electronic recording.
