In January 2025, a female mountaineer tragically died from hypothermia just below the summit of Austria's highest peak, the Großglockner, while attempting a difficult route with her partner. Despite being significantly behind schedule, the couple declined assistance from mountain rescue. The male partner, however, managed to survive the ordeal. The incident highlights the severe risks associated with high-altitude mountaineering, particularly when facing challenging conditions and delays, leading to a fatal outcome for one climber.
