MeinungÖsterreich:Wieso Österreich seit Wochen über die Wehrpflicht debattiert 20.02.2026

Austria is currently engaged in a serious debate regarding the future of its conscription system, a topic that has resurfaced due to the ongoing war in Ukraine. While an expert commission has presented detailed recommendations, including extending military service from six to eight months and increasing its financial attractiveness, the federal government remains indecisive. This renewed discussion contrasts sharply with the situation in 2010, when conscription was not a significant political issue, and a 2013 referendum saw 59% of Austrians vote in favor of maintaining it, largely attributed to a passive acceptance. The current geopolitical climate, however, underscores the need for a capable defense force, as Austria's neutrality is no longer seen as an absolute shield. Despite support for the commission's proposals from figures like the Federal President, the governing coalition is still developing a unified position, and a proposed new referendum has been ruled out.
