MEPs warn of ‘serious risks’ to Hungary election 09.04.2026

Five senior Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) have expressed grave concerns to European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen regarding the integrity of Hungary's upcoming parliamentary elections on Sunday, April 7, 2024. The MEPs cite a "potential Russian interference operation" and "state-led intimidation" as serious threats to a free and fair electoral environment. They are urging the Commission to take concrete steps, including a public assessment of whether disinformation, foreign interference, misuse of state resources, and intimidation of journalists are undermining democratic competition. The letter highlights investigative reporting on a Russian military intelligence operation supporting the ruling Fidesz party and the targeting of investigative journalist Szabolcs Panyi, who exposed alleged ties between Hungary's Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó and Russia. Attempts to hack the opposition Tisza party's IT systems are also noted.
