Merc: Opposition parties flag GNU-bias, warn it could undermine process 03.06.2026

Opposition parties have raised concerns regarding the impartiality of Makashule Gana's election as chairperson of the Impeachment Committee, established to investigate grounds for President Ramaphosa's removal over the Phala Phala farm theft. Critics, including Dr. Lehlohonolo Mahlatsi of the United Africans Transformation and Dr. John Hlophe of the MK Party, argue that Gana's affiliation with Rise Mzansi, a participant in the Government of National Unity (GNU), creates a perception of bias and could undermine public trust in the process. They emphasize the need for an inquiry insulated from political expediency. Gana, however, stated that the GNU is separate from Parliament and that his election reflects his established work and commitment to objectivity.
