A recent survey by the Merdeka Center has found majority support for electing the mayor of Kuala Lumpur, as part of broader public appetite for political reforms in Malaysia. The poll, conducted among 1,209 registered voters between March 12 and April 9, 2026, showed 58% nationwide support for direct KL mayoral elections, with only 19% opposed. Support was higher among non-Malay respondents at 65% in favor, while 56% of Malay respondents also backed the proposal, indicating cross-ethnic endorsement.
