Meta accused of restricting sexual health and queer Instagram accounts 15h ago

International reproductive rights, sexual health, and LGBTQIA+ organizations report their Instagram accounts being disabled or restricted by Meta, with French medical NGO Médecins du Monde (MdM) experiencing the permanent disabling of its "Jasmine" program account on May 11, 2024, after repeated suspensions without clear explanations. Campaigners like Repro Uncensored have documented a significant increase in such complaints, noting over 130 reports in April alone, affecting accounts across Europe and beyond. These restrictions, including account removals, deleted posts, and shadowbanning, are occurring despite organizations carefully adapting language to comply with community standards, leading to concerns of arbitrary censorship and digital discrimination. Several groups, including MdM and My Voice, My Choice, have publicly criticized Meta, with some organizations sending a formal notice citing EU regulations like the Digital Services Act (DSA) and GDPR, alleging that Meta is structurally excluding minority groups from digital public discourse. Meta maintains that all users are subject to the same rules and that claims of discrimination are baseless, stating they provide explanations under the DSA, though affected groups report vague justifications.
