Meta Employees Absolutely Hate Mark Zuckerberg’s Plan for a Companywide AI Hackathon 12.06.2026

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg recently announced a companywide AI hackathon scheduled for July 14 to July 16, aimed at fostering camaraderie and AI innovation among the company's 70,000 employees. However, the initiative has sparked significant backlash and frustration internally. Employees report that recent mass layoffs, which saw 8,000 people leave the company last month, have left remaining staff overwhelmed with increased workloads and aggressive goals. Workers expressed that low morale, a lack of psychological safety, and the fact that hackathon contributions do not count toward performance evaluations make participation impractical. Alongside the hackathon, Zuckerberg introduced other workforce re-energizing measures, including increased budgets for team offsites and the removal of hot desking in certain offices to address productivity concerns and internal unrest. Meta declined to comment on the situation.
