Mexico City tightens security and caps crowds for Mexico-England match after 4 deaths 04.07.2026

Mexico City is implementing enhanced security measures and crowd caps for Sunday's Mexico-England World Cup match following the deaths of four fans. Mayor Clara Brugada announced that the popular "Angel of Independence" monument and the Zócalo fan festival will have limited capacity, with 25,000 people allowed at the Angel and similar restrictions at the Zócalo, directing overflow crowds to designated viewing areas. Security along Paseo de la Reforma will be doubled to 6,000 officers, with additional police presence at Estadio Azteca and the Zócalo. The city is also prohibiting alcohol sales on central streets and restricting street vendors and delivery drivers in key celebration zones. These measures aim to ensure safety after recent incidents, including asphyxiation and cardiac arrest deaths among fans celebrating Mexico's wins.
