Mexico authorities announce police action for World Cup showdown against England after tragic incident 04.07.2026

Mexican authorities have announced the deployment of 17,000 police officers to manage the high-stakes World Cup 2026 last-16 match between Mexico and England in Mexico City. Following a tragic crush during post-game celebrations after Mexico's victory over Ecuador, which resulted in four deaths, officials are taking extreme precautions to ensure public safety. Approximately 6,000 officers will be stationed along the 12km Paseo de la Reforma to manage crowds that could exceed 2 million people. Additionally, 100 riot police will guard England’s team hotel to prevent disturbances. Despite discussions regarding potential kick-off changes due to weather concerns and safety, FIFA has confirmed the match will proceed at the Azteca Stadium at 6pm local time. Mexico manager Javier Aguirre expressed significant frustration regarding the lack of consultation from FIFA regarding scheduling, noting the disruption to his team's training and recovery routines.
