Mexico is poised to become the first country globally to legally protect the human voice as an artistic tool against unauthorized AI cloning. This legislative initiative, proposed by President Claudia Sheinbaum's administration in mid-February, aims to address the growing threat of artificial intelligence to creative professionals in the synchronization industry. The move follows public criticism of robotic-sounding AI-generated Spanish dubs for Korean series on Amazon Prime Video in May 2024, which prompted the streaming service to withdraw the affected versions. Mexico, home to Latin America's largest synchronization industry, producing approximately 65% of the region's dubbed content, sees this as a crucial step to safeguard the livelihoods of its estimated 1,500 voice actors and the sector's significant economic contribution.
