Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, alias « El Mencho », the 59-year-old leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel, was killed Sunday during a major military operation in Jalisco State, Mexico. Mexican Defense Minister Ricardo Trevilla Trejo confirmed that forces located El Mencho in the mountainous village of Tapalpa by tracking a close associate of one of his girlfriends, aided by crucial US intelligence. During the operation, El Mencho attempted to flee with bodyguards, leading to multiple shootouts. Eight armed men were killed on site, and over 70 people died in related violence. Grievously wounded, he died during transfer to Mexico City. The intervention triggered a wave of cartel reprisals across several Mexican states, raising fears of escalating violence.
