Microsoft joins AI cost-cutting trend by relying more on its own models 07.07.2026

As the immense costs associated with artificial intelligence continue to escalate, Microsoft has reportedly implemented a new cost-cutting strategy by prioritizing its own in-house models over third-party software. According to a Bloomberg report, Microsoft is increasingly utilizing its proprietary MAI models to handle a specific percentage of user prompts within widely used programs like Excel and Word. While the company previously emphasized its reliance on models from OpenAI and Anthropic for Office 365, it is now actively developing its own AI agents to reduce expenses. This shift follows the recent announcement of seven new MAI models at the annual Build conference, including text-to-image generators. This movement reflects a broader industry trend where tech giants like Amazon, Meta, and Uber are seeking thrifty alternatives to manage the significant financial burden of providing high-level AI services.
