Military-trained fugitive accused of shooting wife eludes manhunt in rural woodlands 05.05.2026

Federal and state agencies are conducting an extensive manhunt in rural Tennessee for Craig Berry, a 44-year-old retired Special Forces veteran with survival training, accused of shooting his wife during a domestic altercation early Sunday morning in Stewart County. Berry fled into dense woodlands near Old Paris Highway after deputies responded around 1:30 a.m.; he is wanted for second-degree attempted murder and is considered highly dangerous. Armed with at least one handgun and possibly extra ammunition, he is familiar with the rugged terrain along the Tennessee-Kentucky border. The search zone has expanded from River Trace Road to highways 79 and 232, involving the Tennessee Highway Patrol, TBI, DHS, and U.S. Marshals. Berry, captured on trail camera in camouflage, is physically fit, an excellent swimmer and diver, and may be moving without electronic devices. Residents are urged to remain vigilant and report any sightings.
