Ministers clash over the establishment of a support center for victims of sexual violence 07.07.2026

A heated exchange took place at a government meeting between Health Minister Hosam Abu Meri and Welfare Minister Reinis Uzulnieks regarding the establishment of a support center for victims of sexual violence. The center's operations are planned to begin on October 1st, with the required 104,744 euros to be redistributed from maternity assistance funding. Uzulnieks expressed concerns about this funding source, pointing to potential shortages in sectoral organizations, while Abu Meri responded sharply, stating that this is not related to the threat to the Riga Maternity Home and criticized the politicization of the issue. Prime Minister Andris Kulbergs maintained that the problems of the Riga Maternity Home are not clear in this context, but NVD head Āris Kasparāns explained that maternity coverage is based on facts. Ultimately, the government supported the budget reallocation for the center's establishment, though ZZS representatives expressed objections and will formulate a joint protest.
