Mkhwanazi’s July 6 media briefing ― a year on 12h ago

One year after KwaZulu-Natal police commissioner Lt-Gen Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi's July 6 media briefing, the fallout from his allegations of systemic corruption continues. Mkhwanazi's claims regarding collusion between senior police officials and criminal cartels led to the establishment of the Madlanga Commission and an ad-hoc parliamentary committee. These investigations have exposed extensive scandals, resulting in numerous suspensions, resignations, and arrests. Key figures implicated include former police minister Senzo Mchunu and various high-ranking officers. The proceedings have been marked by violence, including the assassination of witness Marius van der Merwe and several shooting incidents involving informants. The commission has referred 14 individuals for criminal investigation, and the investigation into tender manipulation and bribery involving Vusimuzi ‘Cat’ Matlala remains ongoing, with the commission's deadline recently extended to August 2026.
