More than 100 dead after goldmine collapses in Central African Republic 20.08.2026

More than 100 people have died after an artisanal goldmine collapsed in the village of Zamboye, about 50 kilometers from Baboua in western Central African Republic, near the border with Cameroon. The landslide occurred on Tuesday afternoon, with social media footage showing sand engulfing a group of miners. A local public prosecutor confirmed many were trapped, but did not give a death toll; however, Red Cross volunteer Gervais Ganagoroh and a senior mining association official both told Reuters that over 100 bodies had been recovered.
