More Than 2,000 Malawians Are Trying to Leave South Africa 03.06.2026

Malawi has initiated a formal voluntary repatriation program for its citizens in South Africa following escalating vigilante attacks and demonstrations targeting African migrants. By June 2, when the repatriation was made official by Malawi's government, over 2,449 Malawians had already returned home independently through border posts, a number that has been steadily increasing. These attacks have predominantly occurred in South African provinces including Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal, and the Western Cape, with specific areas like Katlehong, Durban, and Gansbaai being heavily impacted. President Cyril Ramaphosa has denounced the violence, but fear persists among foreign nationals, prompting the Malawian government to warn its citizens about potential scammers posing as official representatives.
