More whales are stranding. Now more people are needed to help them 10.03.2026

The British Divers Marine Life Rescue (BDMLR) is actively recruiting more volunteers to address a significant increase in whale, dolphin, and porpoise strandings on UK shores, a trend observed to be rising in recent years, particularly after winter storms. Factors contributing to this surge include man-made hazards, increased public awareness, and abundant prey near coasts. BDMLR data reveals a doubling of live strandings from 22 in 2018 to 46 by 2025, with numbers peaking in the 60s for both 2023 and 2024. While volunteer numbers have grown from 2,000 to 3,500 over eight years, certain coastal areas still require more local responders. The organization provides specialized training, including a £150 Marine Mammal Medic Course, to equip volunteers with skills for assessing, providing first aid, and refloating stranded animals, with whales presenting the most complex rescue challenges.
