Moviment Graffitti has urged the Planning Authority and the government to halt a controversial boutique hotel development proposed by Pecunia European Properties Ltd. The project, located at an 18th-century palazzo on Triq il-Kbira in Qormi’s Urban Conservation Area, involves demolishing derelict structures to build multiple blocks and 17 pools within a historic Baroque garden. Despite opposition from Qormi mayor Josef Masini Vento and local residents, the case officer has recommended approval for the July 9 hearing. The NGO warns that the development will destroy ancient citrus and olive trees, increase noise and traffic, and violate DC15 policy regarding the safeguarding of urban green spaces. Furthermore, they expressed concerns that extensive excavation could contaminate the local groundwater table with sewage, chlorine, and pesticides, ultimately transforming the historic tat-Tabib Maempel palace into a disruptive commercial complex.
