Multiple protestors charged under Queensland’s ‘from the river to the sea’ ban 21h ago

The Guardian Australia

In Brisbane, Queensland, twenty people were arrested on Saturday afternoon for reciting and displaying the phrases “from the river to the sea” and “globalise the intifada,” which the state government banned in February. Approximately 300 protesters gathered to challenge the legislation that carries potential two-year jail sentences for using these pro-Palestine expressions. Police reported the demonstration was largely peaceful, with 20 individuals facing a total of 21 charges. This action followed a protest on Friday where a flashmob, singing John Farnham's "Two Strong Hearts," deliberately included the lyric "like a river to the sea" without leading to any arrests, highlighting a perceived inconsistency in enforcement. The ban, despite civil liberties concerns, has also been considered by New South Wales, with Premier Chris Minns citing its operation in Queensland.
