Municipales 2026 à Cholet : « On l’aimait bien Bourdouleix »… L’affaire du feu d’artifice peut-elle peser dans les urnes ? 22.02.2026

Gilles Bourdouleix, the long-serving mayor of Cholet, is seeking re-election for a sixth term amidst controversy surrounding the 2022 July 14th fireworks incident. He was recently handed an eighteen-month suspended prison sentence and a €750 fine for his role in the event that resulted in the deaths of a 7-year-old and a 24-year-old. Despite deeming the conviction unjust, Bourdouleix is not appealing to avoid further distress to the victims' families. The incident has deeply marked the community, with some residents expressing a shift in their voting intentions, while others acknowledge his past contributions to the town. Opposition candidates, including Isabelle Leroy and Franck Loiseau, plan to leverage the controversy and Bourdouleix's past remarks, including a 2013 comment about Hitler, to influence the upcoming municipal elections.
