Municipales 2026 : quel est vraiment le "salaire" d'un maire et de ses adjoints ? 21.02.2026

While the roles of mayor, deputy mayor, and municipal councilor are legally unpaid, elected officials in French municipalities are entitled to an indemnity to cover expenses and the demands of their duties. This indemnity is strictly regulated and its maximum amount is determined by law based on the population of the municipality, calculated as a percentage of the final index of the public service remuneration scale. For municipalities with 100,000 inhabitants or more (excluding Paris, Marseille, and Lyon), councilors can receive up to €246.63 gross per month, a sum that must be shared from the overall budget allocated to the mayor and deputies. Transport costs incurred during official duties are also reimbursable.
