He later led his unit out of a deadly encirclement with minimal losses. Known for favoring Western military tactics over Soviet-era strategies, Drapatyi helped stop Russia's advance on Kryvyi Rih in 2022 and has stated that Russia "doesn't have a right for existence." His appointment has been welcomed by many within Ukraine's military, who trust his soldier-focused leadership.
