Na ruim 5 jaar zwemmen er weer vissen in het gloednieuwe aquarium van Artis 07.03.2026

After more than five years, the monumental aquarium at Artis, dating back to 1882 and the world's oldest functioning aquarium, is nearing the completion of its extensive renovation. This €50 million project, the most significant and costly in Artis's history, was necessitated by leaks in the old concrete tanks due to saltwater. The aquaria are now gradually being restocked with fish, with a recent delivery of spotted sharks, crabs, and starfish arriving from the Wildlands zoo in Emmen. Curator Alex Huiberse is overseeing the placement of these new inhabitants, some of which, like the meter-long spotted shark, will undergo a three-week quarantine before joining their permanent exhibits. The public will be able to visit the revitalized aquarium starting Saturday, June 13.
