Na tien jaar bakkeleien krijgen bewoners Heintje Hoeksteeg eindelijk een hek: "Was openbaar toilet" 04.03.2026

After a decade of persistent complaints from residents, the Heintje Hoeksteeg in Amsterdam's city center will finally have its alleyway secured with gates, which will be locked nightly from 8:00 PM to 8:00 AM. Residents have endured significant nuisance from drug users, dealers, and intoxicated tourists, leading to issues like discarded needles, human waste, and vandalism. Despite initial resistance from the municipality, which cited concerns about creating a "waterbed effect" and maintaining east-west routes, the decision to install the gates was made in September 2023 due to the prolonged and severe disturbances, as evidenced by police camera footage. The delay in implementation is attributed to lengthy procedures, including considerations for adjacent monumental buildings. An official ceremony to mark the occasion will be held on Thursday at 5:30 PM.
