On February 22, 2026, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the entire 82 km Delhi-Meerut Namo Bharat corridor and the Meerut Metro services, marking a significant advancement in India's public transportation. The Namo Bharat, India's first regional rapid transit system with a design speed of 180 km/h, will connect Sahibabad, Ghaziabad, Modinagar, and Meerut to Delhi, enhancing intercity travel. The inauguration included the commissioning of the 5 km Sarai Kale Khan to New Ashok Nagar section in Delhi and the 21 km Meerut South to Modipuram section in Uttar Pradesh. Additionally, the Meerut Metro, operating on the same infrastructure and boasting a 120 kmph operational speed, will provide swift intra-city movement, aiming to reduce traffic congestion and carbon emissions.
