NASA announces three new Moon missions as agency races to build permanent lunar base by end of 2026 6h ago

NASA has announced three new uncrewed lunar missions, all slated for launch by the end of 2026, as part of an ambitious initiative to establish a permanent American presence on the Moon, referred to as "Moon Base." These missions aim to test commercial landers, autonomous vehicles, and lunar surface operations in preparation for sustained astronaut missions and future Mars exploration. Moon Base I will utilize Blue Origin's lander for payloads near the south pole, targeting a fall 2026 launch. Moon Base II and III will send Astrobotic's lander with a lunar rover and NASA's Lunar Vertex science mission, respectively, both aiming for pre-2026 liftoffs. This phased approach, mirroring the Apollo era, involves commercial partnerships and iterative testing to develop essential technologies for lunar habitation.
