NASA declares end of mission for long-lasting Mars orbiter 03.06.2026

NASA has officially declared the end of its Mars Atmosphere and Volatile Evolution Mission (MAVEN) orbiter, citing an irretrievable loss of contact. The $582 million spacecraft, launched in 2013, was last heard from on December 6, 2025, during a scheduled pass behind Mars. Despite extensive efforts to reset its computer and re-establish communication, no signal has been received since. MAVEN's mission, originally planned for one year, was extended multiple times, providing critical data on how the solar wind erodes Mars' atmosphere and offering insights into the planet's past habitability. The orbiter also played a role in relaying communications for NASA's Mars rovers. An anomaly review board is investigating the cause of the signal loss, with recovered data suggesting the spacecraft entered an unrecoverable spin.
