NASA outlines plan for imminent launch of Artemis human moon mission 13.01.2026

NASA is preparing for the imminent launch of Artemis 2, the first human mission to the moon in over 50 years, with a potential liftoff window opening as early as February 6 and extending through April. This 10-day mission will send four astronauts—Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, Christina Koch, and Jeremy Hansen—on a journey around the moon aboard the Orion capsule, atop the massive Space Launch System (SLS) rocket. While Artemis 2 will not involve a lunar landing, it serves as a critical test of systems and hardware for future lunar expeditions and the establishment of a permanent human presence on the moon, a key objective of the broader Artemis program. The SLS rocket, standing 322 feet tall, is scheduled for rollout to Launch Pad 39B at Kennedy Space Center in Florida in the coming days, with final preparations including a wet dress rehearsal and flight readiness review before a target launch date is confirmed.
