On June 5, 2026, NASA and the United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS) conducted a groundbreaking test at Langley Research Center in Virginia, using a drone to transport a human kidney beyond the operator's line of sight for the first time. The kidney used was not viable for transplantation, allowing researchers to test the concept safely. The drone flew under Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) requirements on NASA's CERTAIN flight range, with pilots monitoring from a control room roughly one mile away.
