Election 2026: National promises to chase seven new trade deals 05.07.2026

Following the successful completion of a free-trade agreement with India, the National Party has announced an ambitious trade expansion strategy for the 2026 election. Leader Christopher Luxon pledged to commence negotiations with seven new partners, including Brazil, Switzerland, Argentina, Bangladesh, Nigeria, Uruguay, and the European Free Trade Association, within the next five years. This initiative aims to increase economic optionality and security in a volatile global market. The plan includes pursuing essential supplies agreements, expanding digital customs to eliminate $1 billion in non-tariff barriers, and conducting at least 23 trade missions. Despite criticism from coalition partner NZ First regarding immigration settings within the India deal, National maintains that all obligations will be met. The party ultimately aims to double the value of New Zealand's exports by 2034 through these strategic commercial engagements.
