This proposed legislation would require any MP wishing to change parties to sit as an Independent and then successfully contest a new election under their new party's banner. The bill draws parallels to a similar law enacted in Manitoba from 2006 to 2018, which was deemed constitutional. Davies, who has proposed similar legislation since 2008, highlighted concerns that MPs may cross the floor seeking preferential treatment for their ridings, a practice he deems "pork-barrel politics."
