Nearly half experience work and leisure blurring together, new analysis shows 07.07.2026

A new analysis from the union IDA shows that 42 percent of its members feel they must be available for work, even during their time off. This phenomenon is particularly pronounced within the knowledge industry, where tasks can be performed independently of time and place, distinguishing it from more physically anchored professions. Associate Professor Claus Westergård Elmholdt from Aalborg University points out that it is specifically in this sector that the boundary between leisure and work blurs. Although many employees feel professional pride and are willing to help, the lack of clear boundaries negatively impacts well-being for many. Malene Matthison-Hansen from IDA therefore emphasizes the importance of clear expectations and explicit agreements between employer and employee to avoid stress, especially when digital messages disrupt private life.
