Neither Montería nor Jerusalem: 3 Colombian municipalities break temperature records, according to IDEAM 04.07.2026

In July 2026, Colombia experienced exceptionally high historic temperatures, surpassing previous records in several municipalities. The Institute of Hydrology, Meteorology and Environmental Studies (IDEAM) has reported that three localities recorded their historic maximum temperatures: Valledupar (Cesar) reached 41.4 °C, surpassing its 2015 record; Lebrija (Santander) reached 30 °C, surpassing its 1991 record; and Ciénaga de Oro (Córdoba) recorded 39.7 °C, surpassing its 2023 record. This phenomenon coincides with the early onset of the El Niño phenomenon, which is projected to be of "very strong" intensity and could make 2027 the warmest year on record, prompting recommendations from IDEAM for water resource management.
