Neoliberale politiek trekt zijn sporen door tot in bed we hebben minder zin in seks 23.02.2026

A significant decline in sexual activity across Western countries, including the Netherlands, is linked to neoliberal politics and societal pressures. While sexual activity has increased among those over 75, younger demographics, particularly 16-24 year olds in the Netherlands, show a marked decrease, with 63% engaging in sex in 2014 versus 56% in 2022. Factors contributing to this "sex recession" include societal demands for constant productivity, economic insecurity, housing shortages, and the commodification of intimacy. Unlike the US and Japan, where long-term data shows a steep decline from 55% weekly sex in 1990 to 37% in 2024, the Netherlands lacks such extensive historical data but mirrors the trend. Denmark is presented as a counterexample, where Gen Z maintains similar sexual activity levels to previous generations, attributing this to a society that prioritizes time, mental space, and security.
