Neue Liebe im Alter: Warum Zusammenziehen glücklicher macht als Heiraten 20.02.2026

A new study involving 2,840 individuals, primarily aged 30-95 with an average of 62, analyzed data from the US "Health and Retirement Study" to determine factors contributing to happiness in later-life relationships. Researchers from the University of Vienna, led by psychologist Dr. Iris Wahring, found that cohabiting with a new partner significantly increased life satisfaction, a finding observed over two-year intervals. Notably, marriage for couples already living together did not yield additional happiness, suggesting that the shared daily life and routines are more impactful than the legal union. The study also indicated that relationship breakups did not consistently lead to a decline in life satisfaction for either men or women, challenging common assumptions about gendered emotional responses to separation and relationship dependence.
